This City Ranked as South Carolina’s Most Inclusive City

According to the 2023 Municipal Equality Index, Myrtle Beach is now the fairest city in South Carolina. The best equity score in South Carolina was given to Myrtle Beach, which was 99. It’s 40 points more than the score from last year. The study gives each city a score between 0 and 100 based on how their LGBTQ+ laws, policies, and services affect the people who live there.

Some organizers in the area said this shows how hard they’ve worked over the last year. Founder of Grand Strand Pride Terry Livingston said that he has worked with the Human Rights Commission over the past year to make the community more welcoming in all areas, such as housing, nightlife, and the job market.

Livingston said, “Our laws against discrimination were one of the things we got credit for.” Whether it’s a public place to stay, a job, or something else. So, I think the scores we’re getting are pretty good for what we have here.

Maria Estelle Picouto, a professor of cultural studies at Coastal Carolina University and an award-winning author, said that these activities are very important for every community.

“I think a community will understand that being different isn’t always a bad thing,” Picouto said. “It’s just different, we can be better community members and citizens, and we can work together to help everyone.”
