Dutchess County launches composting grants for municipalities and schools

PUCKHKEEPSIE In order to give local residents access to composting options, the Dutchess County Division of Solid Waste Management has introduced a new grant program for towns to buy and install composting equipment.

In order to collaborate with municipalities, villages, cities, and school districts who want to use composting to minimize food and organic waste, the county is offering matching grant money of up to $50,000 per project.

Through the scheme, localities will be able to buy and set up in-vessel aerobic composters, allowing residents to get rid of organic leftovers—possibly even food scraps—close to home.

The organic materials are turned into composted material by the composting machines, which inhabitants can then take home and use as mulch for landscaping and gardening or as an addition to their rich soil.

Applicants can email [email protected] or call 845-463-6020 to reach the county Division of Solid Waste Management for assistance with the application process.
