When you woke up from a dream, did it feel a little too real? You know, the kind of dream where you can’t wait to wake up? Yes, we did too! One of the worst dreams that can feel a little too real is one in which your partner cheats on you.
According to psychologist Manuela Schmitten, who spoke to HelloGiggles, thinking that your partner has cheated on you is one of the five most common dreams, along with falling and being naked in public.
Even though it might be hard to wake up from such a disturbing dream, we wouldn’t blame you for keeping your boyfriend out of your life while you deal with your feelings. As with most dreams, this one could be telling you about problems in your relationship that you haven’t talked about yet.
What does it mean when you think that your partner is cheating on you? Find out from both a psychologist and a dream expert, whether you’re in a long-term relationship or just enjoying being single.
If You Are in a Relationship
It’s easy to see why this kind of dream could be traumatic if you’re in a safe, long-term, or loving relationship. Even though the sensible and sensible parts of our brains know that a dream is just a dream, even the most secure people can feel a little uneasy after having a dream that their partner is cheating on them. Manuela Schmitten, a psychologist from Inner Space Psychology, says that this type of dream can mean different things and that you should think about whether you’re afraid or insecure about your relationship.
“If you dream that your partner cheated on you while you’re in a relationship, it could mean that you have deep-seated insecurities that you haven’t dealt with yet,” says Schmitten. It could also mean that your relationship is missing something. Ask yourself if there’s something you want more of from your partner that they’re not giving you.
Look at your relationship from different angles, like your physical, emotional, and spiritual link with your partner. Be honest with yourself about what you think is missing or what you want more of.
If You Are Single
Even though it’s not as scary to dream about being cheated on when you’re single, it can still be scary to wake up from. Inbaal Honigman, a famous psychic and dream expert, says that it could mean that you or someone close to you has betrayed you or acted dishonestly toward you.
Honigman says, “It’s not a surprise that dreaming of being cheated on is often linked to dishonest behavior. It’s up to you to figure out if you’ve been on the giving or receiving end.” Did you lie to a friend not long ago? Or did you think someone was lying to you? When people act like this in real life, Honigman says it can make them dream about stealing.
If You Have Been Cheated Before
A lot of the time, this kind of dream is caused by the past showing up in the present. That’s why it’s common to dream that your partner is cheating on you if you’ve been cheated on before. Now is the time to think about whether you’ve earned back the trust that you lost in the past.
You might be afraid that your new boyfriend will do the same thing if a past partner did something bad to you, says Schmitten. “Having dreams about bad things that happened in the past is normal. But you should talk to your current partner about your worries so that you can work through your anxiety and insecurities as a team.”
