City of Kingston acquires blighted property

Kingston 25 Field Court, a long-vacant property that has been in arrears on taxes since 2010, has been acquired by the City of Kingston.

Situated in a residential and commercial district of Midtown, the property is slightly under one acre and is close to both the lively Broadway business corridor and the Midtown Linear Park.

In the midst of our city, this land has regrettably been abandoned for many years, while the Field Court area around it has developed into a thriving magnet for neighborhood businesses, according to Mayor Steven Noble. Future improvements that will turn the location back into a thriving community asset excite me.

25 For far too long, Field Court has been a nuisance in the midtown area. This is a rare chance for the city to take part in the environmental restoration and redevelopment of this significant property in accordance with the objectives of the recently adopted zoning code for the city. The director of Housing Initiatives, Bartek Starodaj, expressed his eagerness to get started on the following steps right away.

The property fronts Field Court about 125 feet and O Neil Street for about 120 feet, the two roads on which it has frontage.

There is a single-story brick building on the land that is approximately 12,000 square feet and was built in 1966, but is currently empty.

There are two parking lots on the property: one facing Field Court and the other toward O Neil Street. There used to be another structure on the property that housed other office and repair functions.

The site is categorized as T5 Flex under the city’s recently enacted form-based zoning rule, which permits a wide range of uses and building styles. As part of the Midtown Thriving project, the city is actively seeking to designate the portion of Midtown that contains 25 Field Court as a Brownfield Opportunity Area. Following its designation as a BOA, the location would become qualified for further tax benefits and subsidies from the state.
