Westchester County increases security for DSS workers following assault

WHITE AREAS: In response to a recent attack on Marie Coto, a caseworker with the Westchester County Department of Social Services (DSS), the county is putting additional safety protocols in place for its employees. When making home and community visits, DSS employees will be accompanied by more security guards. Although DSS has traditionally offered escort services, this new endeavor broadens their scope to include more trips and activities.

Westchester County Executive George Latimer stated, “This unanticipated and tragic incident has prompted us to take immediate action to protect our personnel from further harm while they perform their duties on behalf of the County of Westchester.” Because DSS employees carry out vital work in the community, we value them and want to take every precaution to keep them safe.

In Peekskill, Coto was attacked while interacting with clients, and he was seriously hurt. Coto stays in the hospital as she heals.

DSS Commissioner Leonard Townes stated that given the urgency of the issue, the agency has decided to enter into an instant contract with a security services provider. We want to make sure that our workers are safe at all times because they do the most selfless labor.

The additional security services will be delivered by Century Protective Services under contract.
