Village of Montgomery an “un-sanctuary community”; Picarello voted to table the bill

MontgomeryOne Orange County city has just done the opposite, while some Hudson Valley municipalities last summer declared themselves sanctuary cities and welcomed refugees from the southern border to their municipalities.

Montgomery Village is now an unsanctuary community. The village board of trustees decided to grant their village such status on Tuesday night by a majority vote.

Trustee Michael Hembury, a candidate for mayor in the March 19 election, put forth the proposal.

About six months ago, the jet touched down at Orange County Airport. “I don’t want to wake up in the morning and find out that our elementary school, senior center, or teen center is full of migrants,” the man stated on Wednesday. We are formally a non-sanctuary city or village because we have a duty to safeguard this community.

Trustee Randi Picarello, Hembry’s rival for mayor, attempted to bring up the proposal.**

**Trustee Picarello voted to table the resolution, not against it, as was previously reported in an inaccurate version of this story. We regret any inconvenience that this has brought about.
