Utah has a lot of different events. From big cities to small towns, every day of the year is a chance to learn, enjoy, and honor. But there is a place in southern Utah that is truly Festival City USA. Cedar City, Utah has a lot of events all year long. The Utah Shakespeare Festival is one of the most popular, drawing thousands of people to the city. But there is still a lot to see and do even if you don’t go during one of the epic events.
Cedar City is in the southern part of Utah. It is right next to Interstate 15 and not far from both Bryce Canyon National Park and Zion National Park. There are more than 37,000 people living in this bigger town, which is bordered by mountains to the east and desert to the west.
Cedar City has been around since the 1850s. It was first called Fort Cedar because there were so many trees in the area. The settlers thought they were cedar trees, but they were really juniper plants. These days, a lot of people come to Cedar City to visit and look around, especially during one of its shows. In fact, Cedar City is known as Festival City USA because there are so many events there all year long.

The Utah Shakespeare Festival, the Livestock and Heritage Festival in Cedar City, the Paiute Restoration Gathering, and the American Southwest Classic Film Festival are just a few of these events.
This festival takes place every summer at Southern Utah University and draws more than 100,000 people from all over the world. This Shakespeare Festival is one of the oldest and biggest in Northern America. It has even won a Tony Award for America’s Outstanding Regional Theatre.
Every year, the Utah Summer Games, which is Utah’s biggest sports event, also take place in Cedar City. Over 9,600 players come to Southern Utah University for this huge event where they try to do their best. About 50,000 people show up to watch the games, and 1,000 helpers are needed. Also, there are a lot of different sports events, from basketball and golf to parkour and pickleball.
There is still a lot to see and do in this town in southern Utah even if you aren’t there for one of the events. As an example, go to Frontier Homestead State Park. This state park, which isn’t very well known, is all about Utah’s mining past. A lot of horse-drawn carriages, interesting items, places to pan for gold, and a lot more can be found there. Take a hike on the Red Hollow Trail outside of town to get close to nature and see the red rocks.

This out-and-back 3.3-mile walk takes you right into the beautiful southern Utah scenery and gives you some truly amazing views.
You can also drive up to Cedar Breaks National Monument and enjoy the view. From the overlooks at this national landmark, you can see a valley 0.5 miles below, which is full of red rocks, cliffs, and trees.
