This Unexpected California City is the US Most Expensive City, Report Says

The Most Expensive Places to Live in the U.S. in 2023–2024 list from U.S. News & World Report put San Diego as the most expensive city in the country based on things like quality of life, housing affordability, and desirability.

U.S. News said that cities like San Francisco (ranked sixth) and New York City (ranked eleventh) which are known for having expensive real estate were ranked much lower.

Twelve of the 25 places on the list were in California, including three of the top five. Los Angeles and Santa Barbara came in second and fifth, respectively.

The indexes, which are used for U.S. News’ Best Places to Live survey, looked at things like the crime rate, the quality of education, the unemployment rate, the median yearly household income, and the average temperature.

Zillow, a real estate website, says that the average home value in San Diego is $961,629, which is a lot more than the $288,539 average home value in the U.S. The average home value in San Francisco is higher than in San Diego, at $1.3 million. This is because San Francisco is higher on the list.

Zillow says that the median monthly rent in San Diego is $3,200, which is less than the median rent in New York, which is almost $3,600, and in San Francisco, which is almost $3,500. These places are thought to be less expensive.
