This Florida City Crime Rates Are Increasing Rapidly Every Year

No matter where you live, you know where the high- and low-crime places are. You also know which cities are the safest and which are the “most dangerous.” Do you live in Volusia County and also visit Daytona Beach? Have you ever thought that you might be living in the “most dangerous city” in Florida? At least that’s what personal injury lawyers at The Schiller and Kessler Group, a law company with offices all over the state, found in a study.

The company looked at FBI data from 2015 to 2019 to “figure out which of Florida’s 65 most populous cities are statistically the most dangerous to live in.” But what did they use as a guide? Is the number of deaths in other towns like Daytona’s?

Daytona’s Crimes As Compared to Other Cities

The company used the information to find the cities with the highest rates of violent crimes per 100,000 people. The violent acts listed are “murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault.” With an average of 1,229.9 violent crimes per year, Daytona Beach was the most dangerous city in the world. These were the next nine cities:

  • Homestead: 1,088.8
  • Miami Beach: 980.5
  • Fort Myers: 893.5
  • West Palm Beach: 854.3
  • Lauderhill: 833.7
  • Pompano Beach: 832.2
  • Tallahassee: 830.3
  • Orlando: 811.5
  • Melbourne: 793.5

Aggravated attack is the number that puts Daytona Beach at the top, even though it only has about 67,000 people, which is tens of thousands less than Orlando and Tallahassee, for example. With a score of 1,016.3, Volusia had more points than the second-place city, Homestead, which scored 608.7.

The numbers show that Daytona’s murder, rape, robbery, and nonnegligent manslaughter rates are about the same as or lower than those in other towns.

Jakari Young, the police chief of Daytona Beach, said that the study had some flaws, such as old data and the fact that Daytona Beach’s population grows quickly, which changes the results.

“When you consider the number of people who live in surrounding cities but work or go to school in Daytona Beach every day and when you consider the events that draw hundreds of thousands of people to the city every year, our population is much higher,” he stated. And if the number of people is wrong, the crime rate per 100,000 is higher.

Conclusion

A study by The Schiller and Kessler Group found Daytona Beach, Florida, as the most dangerous city in the world with an average of 1,229.9 violent crimes per 100,000 people. The study used FBI data from 2015 to 2019 to determine the most dangerous cities in Florida. However, Daytona Beach’s population growth and the number of people living in surrounding cities may have influenced the results.
