The Nevele – Borscht Belt icon – goes up in flames Tuesday night
Flames nearing the tower at the Nevele were visible in the night sky.

AWARSING Tuesday night, the once-grand Nevele Resort caught fire, causing multiple fire departments to respond to the Wawarsing/Ellenville area in order to contain the massive wildfire. 9:27 p.m. was when the fire was first reported.

According to fire officials, the buildings, some of which are from the early 1900s, were being attacked by the fire from the outside, and no firefighters were entering them.

As of 10:30 p.m. on March 19, Ulster County fire companies from Ellenville, Cragsmoor, Napanoch, Walker Valley, and Kerhonkson were on the scene. A water tanker from the Sullivan County fire department in Summitville was helping them.

Any plans for rebuilding have been put on hold until the autumn of 2023 due to lawsuits and other concerns surrounding the former resort that featured an iconic tower as its focal point.

The land was sold to 1100 Arrow LLC for $5 million in late September as part of a plan to destroy the remaining dilapidated structures and create room for a new hotel facility and 126-unit housing development.
