Shooting on Main Street in Poughkeepsie near Kennedy Fried Chicken (VIDEO)

PUCKHKEEPSIE On Saturday night, there was a report of a male with a gunshot wound in the vicinity of 472 Main Street, prompting the response of city police, fire, and EMS. The man was found by the first responding cops with a gunshot wound to his torso. In addition, an MTA police squad arrived to support the city police. The shooting started around ten twenty in the evening.

The empty lot directly east of the Kennedy Fried Chicken business is thought to be the scene of the crime.

The individual was triaged by City of Poughkeepsie firefighters and then transported to a nearby hospital via ambulance.

In order to give police with scene lighting while they collected evidence, the fire crew stayed on the site with the tower ladder truck.

After the incident, a message was issued to all officers asking if they could go to work due to the serious staffing problem in the police department. It was unclear if any officers consented to enter the area to do crime scene processing, support the investigation, or fulfill other tasks. The PBA and the city have a contract that calls for 96 sworn officer posts. Less than 70 officers are available for duty at any given time, the lowest level of staffing in thirty years due to retirements, military service, and injuries, all of which are occurring at an alarming rate for the city.

Police are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact the private TIP LINE of the City of Poughkeepsie Police at 845-451-7577. The shooting is currently under investigation.
