Margaret Walker is Serino s nomination for Public Defender

PUCKHKEEPSIE Margaret Walker’s appointment as the next public defender for the county was approved unanimously by the Dutchess County Legislature’s Public Safety Committee.

Walker will be confirmed by the entire legislature on January 16 following Thursday night’s favorable vote.

Prosecutor and defense lawyer Walker has extensive expertise. Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino nominated Walker earlier this month, and Walker was present for the voting on Thursday night.

Walker will take over for veteran Dutchess County Public Defender Tom Angell, who announced his retirement in December after 34 years with the county and serving as the office’s head for the previous twelve.

When Serino nominated Walker for the position, the county executive said, Margaret s breadth of education, experience, and passion to serve others make her the ideal person to serve as our next public defender. Serino said, In addition to her well-deserved reputation as a capable leader and legal mind, she brings her education and prior work experience in community and counseling psychology, which is critically important in helping to meet client needs and assist them in rebuilding productive lives. Our community will be well-served with Margaret Walker as our public defender.

Walker, a Wappingers Falls resident seated in the gallery, was applauded by every lawmaker in the room after obtaining approval from the 11 current members of the public safety committee.
