Police warn residents to beware of peddlers

Residents in the wider Carmel, Mahopac, and Mahopac Falls area have been complaining a lot to CARMEL-Carmel Police in recent days about door-to-door solicitors.

The Carmel Town Code refers to the solicitations as peddlers, and peddling without a permit or in violation of the town code is punishable by a fine of up to $1,000 or 15 days in jail, according to Police Chief Anthony Hoffmann.

Permits for solicitors and peddlers are handled by the Carmel Town Clerk’s Office. As of Friday, Alice Daly, the town clerk, stated that no applications for solicitation or peddling permits had been received by the office.

Chief Hoffmann advised calling the Carmel Police Department at 845-628-1300 if locals or businesses come across obtrusive salespeople or solicitors.
