Orange County Land Trust completes Sugar Loaf Mountain acquisition

MONTAINDALE The 309-acre Sugar Loaf Mountain property in the Town of Chester has been fully acquired, according to a Thursday announcement from the Orange County Land Trust.

According to James Delaune, executive director of the land trust, the organization’s main objective was to create the first-ever access to the mountain’s summit while extending outdoor activity by joining the property to the nearby Goosepond Mountain State Park.

Additionally, he noted that it has an economic development component because it can be connected to build a trail system that leads to Sugar Loaf Mountain’s summit and into the settlement of Sugar Loaf, which is home to stores, pubs, restaurants, and other establishments.

It wasn’t until the Palmer family and the land trust got together to talk about their aspirations and intentions for their land.

A formal agreement between the two parties gave the land trust the sole right to purchase the property in June 2022.

Before they received a sizable loan from benefactor The Peter and Lucia Buck Foundation, financing the purchase of the property was difficult to come by.

Walden Savings Bank later provided funds to the land trust.

The Save the Mountain campaign was then started, and it was able to gather over $200,000 in community donations and the interest of an Emmy-winning filmmaker who offered to contribute his time to make a mini-documentary about the effort.

Land Trust Alliance, Scenic Hudson, and the State Department of Environmental Conservation all provided support.

The ultimate objective, according to Delaune, is for Orange County to purchase the area and transform it into a passive park.
