Murder Charges Filed Against Man in Tragic Crash Following Police Pursuit

EL PASO, Texas – El Paso Police said in an update Sunday that a 21-year-old man from Horizon City is being charged with murder after they say he escaped police and crashed into three other cars early Saturday morning, Oct. 14, near the Ysleta port of entry.

Three people died and three were hurt in an accident at 700 S. Zaragoza in the Americas. Carlos Alejandro Martinez is charged with three counts of murder and one count of fleeing arrest or detention causing death. Police say Martinez is one of the hurt and will be booked until he or she can be released from the hospital. A 31-year-old woman, a 27-year-old woman, and an 8-year-old girl were killed in the crash, but no names were given.

At about 8:30 a.m. Saturday, a marked police unit saw a car going very fast on Loop 375 eastbound at the Padres overpass, according to the police. There was an effort to stop the driver, but the driver sped up when the officer started the stop, according to the police.

Police say that the officer left the traffic stop because the car was going too fast. The car that was trying to get away took the Zaragoza exit, then ran a red light and hit three other cars that were at the crossing. The impact was so strong that one of the cars caught fire while the people inside were still inside. The three women inside, who were 8, 27, and 31 years old, died at the scene.

Martinez, the driver of the running car, tried to leave the scene of the crime and would not listen to the police, so one of them shocked him with a taser, according to the police. Two of the other people in Martinez’s car were hurt, including a 21-year-old man who was badly hurt. Martinez was hurt in the accident too.

Police say that two other cars were also involved, but the people inside those cars were not hurt. Martinez was given warrants for three counts of murder worth a total of $3 million and for fleeing arrest or detention causing death with a bond of $500,000. There are still questions being asked about this crash. These are the 57th, 58th, and 59th road deaths this year. At this point last year, there were 55.
