A police chase across Polk and Hillsborough counties Friday night resulted in the arrest of medications, drug paraphernalia, and marijuana, according to officials.
Troopers of the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) monitoring traffic on I-4 near Milepost 35 in Polk County observed a Volkswagen car driving recklessly at 119 mph in a 70 mph zone.
The troopers attempted to perform a traffic stop, but the Volkswagen accelerated and fled with its lights turned off.
The vehicle entered Hillsborough County and reached speeds of more than 130 mph before exiting the interstate and traveling westbound on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
The suspect was forced to halt at East Lake Avenue and North 34th Street because the vehicle’s tires disintegrated.
The suspect, John Dylan Butler, 20, of Apollo Beach, Florida, then turned himself in.
Troopers discovered drug paraphernalia, 886 oxycodone pills, and a considerable amount of marijuana during Butler’s arrest.
Butler was arrested and accused of running and evading, careless driving and many felony narcotics counts.
