Motorist fleeing police wrecks cars on 9W, snarls traffic (GALLERY)

NEWBURGH TOWN Police pursued a driver south on Route 9W after he refused to stop for a state trooper in Highland. This led to a collision and a foot pursuit. Tuesday, just before 1:00 p.m., the man who was leading the police on a chase was brought into custody.

At at 12:15 p.m., a state policeman tried to pull over a Honda Civic on Route 9W near Chapel Hill Road in the Town of Lloyd. The driver, however, resisted and took off south on 9W, with the trooper pursuing. Towns of Newburgh and Marlborough police participated as well. The fleeing driver was apprehended at the crossroads of 9W and Chestnut, close to the M&T Bank in the Town of Newburgh, after colliding with the Marlborough police vehicle and three other vehicles.

The motorist tried to run away after being pulled over, but he was caught and taken into prison on the Powelton Club Golf Course.

There have been reports of injuries at the location. The injured are being treated by the Town of Newburgh EMS, the Middle Hope and Cronomer Valley Fire Departments.

Drivers are advised to look for other routes while the inquiry is ongoing.
