Maryland will be able to offer marijuana to adults starting on July 1. Some people like the new law, but there are still a lot of rules, and Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan wants everyone to know what they are.
“Recreational marijuana is only legal for adults over the age of 21 or older and they may only possess up to 1.5 ounces of cannabis or marijuana,” said Meehan. The most important thing to know is that even though it’s allowed, you can’t smoke it in public places like restaurants, the beach, the boardwalk, or buses.
But now that it’s allowed, where can you smoke pot in Ocean City? Mayor Meehan said that people can only smoke in their own homes. He also said that if you are living in a home or hotel with a no-smoking policy, you also can’t smoke there.
Greg Bailey, who has lived in Ocean City for a long time, said that he doesn’t see how this new law can be followed because the old ones are already hard to follow.
“It’s going to be kind of hard to control because currently out on the beach, there is a designated area to smoke and you still see people vaping and smoking down near the water,” said Bailey. But for some, like local Alex Alexis, legalization isn’t just about being able to get high; it’s a big deal.
“For people who have a criminal past and have gotten in trouble for things like smoking marijuana, it’s more of a relief to know that that’s one less thing that you have to worry about getting in trouble for,” said Alexis.
That being said, if someone is found smoking pot, they will only get a warning and a $25 fine. Ocean City’s town government said that people will need some time to get used to this new law, but they just want everyone to follow it.
