Local Woman from Florence Charged with Insurance Fraud

North Carolina’s Insurance Commissioner, Mike Causey, said that 28-year-old Florence, South Carolina resident Shimecca Montrese McCall, has been charged with insurance theft. McCall is accused of getting renters’ insurance from Liberty Mutual Fire Insurance Company and then lying about what the policy covered.

According to the charge, McCall is accused of reporting a flood in her bathroom after her policy went into effect. Supposedly, the flood happened on January 22, one day before the policy went into effect. This behaviour is considered a crime.

McCall is scheduled to go to court in Mecklenburg County on December 13. Special agents from the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division are in charge of handling the case.

Keep insurance rates low. Commissioner Causey tells people in North Carolina to report any suspected insurance scam. He clarified that insurance fraud involves hurting other people and causes everyone’s rates to go up.

The North Carolina Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division wants to hear about cases of insurance theft or other white-collar crimes. They accept private reports by phone or on their website.
