Letter to the Editor: Claire Cousin is the climate candidate

When I became Didi Barrett s constituent, I was thrilled to finally have a Democrat represent me in the NY State Assembly. One of the issues I care about most, and where there are clear distinctions between parties, is climate change. I am pleased that my State Senator is among the co-sponsors of an important climate bill, the NY HEAT Act. So I was surprised when Assemblymember Barrett vehemently pushed back against the HEAT Act during a meeting with me and fellow constituents.

In his capacity as the Energy Committee Chair, Barrett can significantly advance climate legislation. Regretfully, Assemblywoman Barrett continues to oppose the HEAT Act with a strong hand. I find it deeply disappointing that she is stifling rather than advancing NY State on this crucial topic by abusing her position as an accomplished leader.

Fortunately, we have a way to stop it: we can elect Claire Cousin, Barrett’s opponent, in the Democratic primary. One of her primary priorities, according to the county legislator and housing activist cousin, is the environment. She has promised to back multiple climate bills, including the HEAT Act. She is also refusing to accept any funding from corporate PACs.

We need to act quickly if we are to have any chance of addressing the climate catastrophe. This entails casting a ballot on June 25th to choose an Assembly member who will genuinely defend the environment. I’m hoping you’ll back Claire Cousin for the NY State Assembly as much as I am.
