ALBANY—On Monday, state senator Michelle Hinchey (D-Saugerties) led a demonstration in Albany to demand full financing for the Healthy School Meals initiative, which would give all state kids free breakfast and lunch.
Hinchey, who has the support of the Healthy Schools Meals for All NY Kids Coalition, stated that the program needs to be extended beyond the funding of the free meals it provided the previous year.
Every student in the state deserves to eat healthily in school, thus it is our duty and obligation to ensure that this program is funded for them all, regardless of their eligibility for public assistance, she said.
Hinchey obtained $134.6 million for nutritious school lunches for more than 347,000 kids in 1,200 schools in the previous year’s budget.
She is requesting financing to expand the program for an additional 321,000 pupils in 650 schools in the state budget for 2024–2025.
