High wind blows façade off Poughkeepsie hotel (VIDEO with Fire Communications)

PUCKHKEEPSIE On Monday, part of the fence around the Double Tree Hotel—also known as the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel—in downtown Poughkeepsie was blown off. This is the second time that substantial portions of the facade have fallen in recent memory onto the portion of Route 44/55 that faces west. Both incidents did not result in any reported injuries.

Firefighters assigned to Ladder 1 temporarily stopped traffic on Civic Center Plaza and Mill Street while they extended the aerial ladder and worked to remove loose siding that may have broken free and fallen.

According to firefighters, the bonding material that is meant to hold the facade in place may have deteriorated because the backing of the facade appears to have suffered substantial water damage, as reported by Mid-Hudson News. The strong gusts helped loosen the facade, allowing it to be blown off the structure.

Officials from the City of Poughkeepsie structure Department were on the scene, coordinating with the hotel administration to arrange for the contractor to secure the structure.

At around 2:45 p.m., the firefighters were evacuated from the scene and sent to another call.

On Monday afternoon, the powerful winds also toppled trees and snapped power lines over the Mid-Hudson.
