PUCKHKEEPSIE Vehicle traffic on Poughkeepsie’s eastbound arterial, route 44/55 Church Street, has been stopped until rescue workers locate any nearby burning power wires. On Friday, January 19, the event started soon after 6:00 p.m., and it is anticipated that the closure will be in place for a long time.
At least one building where the defective electrical line was providing service was entered by City of Poughkeepsie firefighters. Firefighters said that the building smelled like smoke, and they were scouring the area extensively to find any possible fires. After arriving on the scene, Central Hudson technicians turned off the electricity in the affected area.
Road salt frequently finds its way into manholes during the winter and mixes with water to disrupt electric service lines, leading to blackouts and fires.
Police from the City of Poughkeepsie were on the scene to help drivers find other routes.
