Census Survey Says That the Most People of Illinois City are on Food Stamps

A deal was recently made between the Biden administration and House Republicans to raise the debt cap. In order to make a deal and keep the US from going into a terrible debt default, the White House agreed to cut spending on a number of social safety net programs, such as food stamps and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

SNAP is a government program that helps families and individuals in need buy food. The debt ceiling deal makes big changes to who can get SNAP. It raises the age limit for older Americans and makes it easier for veterans and homeless people to get help.

Based on the most recent information from the American Community Survey of the U.S. Census Bureau, more than 15.8 million households, or 12.4% of all households, got SNAP payments in 2021. And it’s still not clear how many Americans will be directly affected by the new changes to eligibility.

According to the numbers we have, Decatur has the highest rate of SNAP recipients out of the 10 metro areas in Illinois. The ACS says that in 2021, 20.4% of all families in the area got SNAP benefits. At the same time, 14.1% of people in the state receive SNAP benefits. Decatur has the 26th highest SNAP recipient rate out of all 366 metro areas in the country for which data is provided.
